Happy Earth Day 2023!! 🌏

🌲Help me plant trees to help our planet this Earth Day:
$1 = 1 tree 🌲

“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us...There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known." Carl Sagan #EarthDay

Here’s my list of 10 things to take away from this collection of papers:

1) We identify multiple chemical species in the atmosphere, including sodium (Na), potassium (K), four independent water (H2O) features, carbon dioxide (CO2), and carbon monoxide (CO). The graphic shows which instrument observed which species.

2) We see evidence of patchy clouds. The cloud deck isn’t one uniform blanket. The data require higher complexity (just as we see on solar system giant planets).

Or you can hear from the paper leads directly while also learning more about the science in this video produced by team member Ryan MacDonald:

Astronomers Discover Sulfur Dioxide in an Exoplanet Atmosphere

Today is a great day for #exoplanet's #atmosphere. There was the release of FIVE papers either accepted or under review on the most-prestigious scientific journal #Nature. Those papers are publicly available on the preprint server #arXiv.

Those 5 papers are focusing on ONE exoplanet (#WASP-39) which was observed by 4 different instrumental modes of #JWST in the near infrared (NIR).

And as with every post/thread I make on #JWST, I'll now remind you that JWST needs to be renamed. I've made a conscious choice to not use the name, and only the acronym, when referring to this telescope, and I encourage you to do the same too.

There were hundreds of #Scientists who contributed to this work from all over the globe, it really was a team effort! Check out this amazing video one of our team members made:

Astronomers Discover Sulfur Dioxide in an Exoplanet Atmosphere

This data is exciting for many reasons, but one unexpected thing was the discovery of SO2 (sulfur dioxide) in this #exoplanet's atmosphere.

SO2 is produced through photochemistry (photons from the star interacting with molecules in the atmosphere) and has never been seen in an exoplanet before!
