Wespe oder Hornisse mit Schnittlauch
This insect is resting on my chivers. At first, I thought it had lost its wings, but they are there, at th lower sides of the insect. The insect is rather large, a bit more than 2 cm, I'd say.
Google image search thinks it's a vespula germanica or vespula vulgaris, but AFAIK these waps are smaller than 2cm. Can it be a European hornet (Vespa crabro)?

@fluffy but I like to pretend every fig seed is a separate wasp and I'm finally able to unleash my revenge by crushing their tiny bones in my teeth. It's the only justification I have to eat figs. Despite being factually deficient.
(Besides, fig wasp backwards is psaw.gif - difficult to not type as swap.)
Big Beautiful Bald Faced Hornet harvesting wood pulp for her nest. Not a true hornet, she's the largest of our native yellow jackets at close to an inch long.
Lots of posts and railings made of washed up wood collected from the harbour provide resources for various Hymenoptera species in the garden.
Being calm and patient allowed me to capture these photos from about 2 inches away from her with a phone.

In Finnish mythology, Päivätär is the goddess of the Sun, as well as life and light in general. It is said that she spins yarn out of the Sun's silver, and from it weaves silver clothes. Päivätär is also the mother of wasps, and people ask her to command her children not to sting.
