Long time hacker, interested in online privacy and security. Lives in Germany.

We're seeing a large influx of new users, so here's some helpful Mastodon tips:

1. Liking a post does not affect its visibility. Instead, use the like button to let a user know that you find them to be irresistibly attractive and would like to become their internet soulmate.

2. Instead of saying orthodontist on here, we say mastodontist. This is important to know.

3. Tell us about yourself! Write either "pro-cannibalism" or "anti-caniballism" in your bio to avoid simple misunderstandings.

It's great that Mastodon's Privacy Policy is so much better than the others. But we're letting the most important point get buried in the noise. There's no real difference between collecting contact info, or device identifiers, or location. Once the app has *anything* that connects to our real identity, that data can be linked to everything else ever collected, and we become the product, and not the users.

From Tim Chambers @tchambers on today's #Meta #Threads news:

Instagram Threads and the Fediverse (Part 4) >>> https://www.timothychambers.net/2023/07/03/instagram-threads-and.html

- Indieweb.social will NOT be pre-emptively taking a “Fediblock as a First Strike” position.

- Will be “Watching Like A hawk, with our fingers on the block button."

- Appears... that Threads will be launching WITHOUT Federation turned on at first...it could be 2 or 3 months.

- Support your admin... as [they] do final preparations... for what will come.

Instagram Threads and the Fediverse (Part 4)

As Meta’s new App - now officially confirmed as “Threads” - has a near-term launch date of July 6th, wanted to restate that Indieweb.social will be taking the same position as almost all mid-sized and large-sized servers and will be “Watching Like a Hawk, with our Fingers Over the Block Button.” We will NOT be pre-emptively taking a “Fediblock as a Frist Strike” position. For reasons I listed here: www.timothychambers.net/2023/06/2…

It's national pollinator week in Canada. Time to get to know your bees

Another thing I would like to adres is the death threats against mods and admins in the Fediverse

No matter what you oppion is about the meta discussion, this is not acceptable behaviour and it hurt so damn much

Please try to be civil about this so we can talk and discus this and keep the channels open

But please, stop with making death threats to people. It really has an impact

Let's talk

I'm pretty sure Mastodon is the first social network I've been on that didn't immediately ask me to betray all of the people in my address book.
Developers need the right to challenge junk patents | The GitHub Blog

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently proposed rule changes that will make it harder to challenge low quality patents. Without the ability to quickly and efficiently challenge wrongly granted patents, innovation and developers suffer.

@demvoter Seriously. We have mute AND block buttons. Stop inserting yourself between people and the people who follow them, defederate only as a last resort when an instance is overwhelmingly causing a problem.
