Hey, AoIRfriends, in case you're wondering, aoir.social won't be allowing a bunch of AI-based accounts to set up here to experiment with trying to change your minds about anything.

And I'm sure none of us would seek to do that to other fediverse instances!

@tschfflr @rwg You are right, I read too quickly and will edit my toot above accordingly. Thank you!!!

@rwg New Atlantic article just dropped, well worth a read. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2025/05/reddit-ai-persuasion-experiment-ethics/682676/

[edited: I misread the article and initially wrongly stated it identifies the lead author, but it was about another study, apologies]

The Secret AI Experiment That Sent Reddit Into a Frenzy

The most persuasive “people” on a popular subreddit turned out to be a front for a secret AI experiment.

@rwg Engage with it ETHICALLY I mean.
@rwg That struck me too, to the point of wondering whether they may have had some background in ethics that has taught them enough about the issue but not about how to engage with it.

- calling on regulators & the technology industry to support transparency for digital experiments conducted on the public

We're grateful to ChangeMyView for bringing it to everyone's attention.

A Case For Ethical and Transparent Research Experiments in the Public Interest - Coalition for Independent Technology Research

On April 26, moderators of r/ChangeMyView, a community on Reddit dedicated to understanding the perspectives of others, revealed that academic researchers from the University of Zürich conducted a large-scale, unauthorized AI experiment on their community. The researchers had used AI bots to secretly impersonate people for experiments in persuasion. Crucially, this experiment was carried out … Continue reading A Case For Ethical and Transparent Research Experiments in the Public Interest

Heute ist offensichtlich mein Medientag 😅

Hier sogar mit Foto und Namen auf der Titelseite 😱 (neben Döner, ChatGPT, 1. Mai und Viking Festival).

@nik Well, difficult to avoid in Swiss academia these days, as many are learning about ethical oversight laws, structures and processes 😬

And I think I’ve also seen @cfiesler and @michaelzimmer posting.
