I think that at the very least the researchers (who are remaining anonymous) should have involved the mods of r/changemyview.
I think that any of my students of my course on online research would have known that.

I only just now heard about the AI bot persuasion experiment carried out on Reddit users on the r/ChangeMyView subreddit.

Last night a group of (leftie) Jews was attacked by a larger group of (very right-wing) Jews in a synagogue, where the former had gathered on the eve of Israeli Remembrance Day to watch a broadcast of a joint Israeli-Palestinian memorial ceremony. The attack was entirely pre-meditated. The police cannot be counted on to protect the left. This is a terrible day.
