It’s going to take us a long time to understand what we have lost with David Lynch’s passing.

Several obituaries have described him as a surrealist. That doesn’t seem exactly right. The US is a surrealist country about which he made realist films. I can’t think of another filmmaker who ‘got’ post-War America like he did. We are unlikely to see another.

Today's #NationalIllustrationDay, a new initiative from the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration. We hope the great Quentin Blake will forgive us for naming him our second favourite illustrator with that surname. William Blake worked as an engraver his whole professional life, engraving the illustrations of other artists and less frequently his own designs. This fantastically weird illustration is 'Fertilisation of Egypt', after a design by Henry Fuseli, for Erasmus Darwin's The Botanic Garden.
