At next week’s Fontstand conference in Berlin, we’ll be trying something new: presenting community news during the breaks. If you have any news that you think is relevant to the wider type community, please let us know.

#fontstandcon2026

Members of the Type community have once again sponsored students for the #fontstandcon2026 making tickets much more affordable. Thank you!
🙏
If you’re a student and want a student ticket at 50% off, email [email protected].

These are the kind people who helped the students: @mass_driver, TPTQ Arabic, Marko Hrastovec, @joanacorreiatype, @MatthijsSluiter, @signaltype, @joyceketterer, @commercial, @jaf, Coppers and Brasses, Playtype, Nouvelle Noire, @productiontype, @paulvanderlaan, @boldmonday, @bennzorn, @martinmajoor, @Lettermin, Nora Warschewski, @AnnaKhorash, Anja Lutz, @benkiel & @jesseragan, @djrrb, @typematesfonts, Eugene Yukechev.

Please share!

@letterror @jasonsantamaria I also think it is an Apple bug. I get this with one system only – but not able to reproduce it on others. It happens with Adobe apps, but also Zoom, Tableau, and our own Fontstand app. We are definitely not trying to “access data from other apps”.

Speaker for the #fontstandcon2026:

Co-founder of Just Another Foundry @jaf @ShokoMugikura will examine why rounded sans carries authority in Japan, tracing its roots in calligraphy, signage, and multiscript typography — and why it means something very different outside Japan.

Exciting news for the #fontstandcon2026!🔥

We’re thrilled to announce our conference speakers starting with the Friday keynote: Italian journalist and graphic designer Francesco Franchi and his keynote “How News Becomes Experience” followed by a Q&A with Peter Biľak.

Interactive fun on iPhone! Try swipe, pinch gestures, and scroll gestures.

Also works on desktop, just click-drag instead of swipe.

As we have done in the past, we try something simple and fair. For the Berlin conference, Fontstand offers a limited number of student tickets. Their availability and price aren’t fixed—they depend on the community. Some attendees choose to pay more than the ticket price, and that extra money goes directly toward lowering the cost for students.
If you’re attending, you decide what you pay above the base price. If you’re a student, email [email protected] and we’ll add you to the list.
There’s no promise that everyone will receive a discounted ticket. This only works if people who can afford more choose to contribute. 🙏🌱

@swanktype @onpaperwings @thierryblancpain @flaviazim FWIW this is why I’m supporting Fontstand — I want it to become a place to care for fonts from those of us that will eventually retire.

Some interesting backstory on @atypi’s “Moral Code”, part of @johndberry’s ongoing ATypI research:
https://johndberry.com/atypi-history/le-code-moral/

It isn’t mentioned there but the Moral Code was how Bitstream justified their practice in the 1980s of making digital copies of other companies’ typefaces. At the time, the Code basically said you must apply for a license to adapt a typeface from another company, but if you are denied it’s moral to do it anyway when the typeface is 15 years old.

Those were different times.
