Biologist. Fair-weather farmer. Compulsive NC voting data analyst. World's oldest campaign digital/comms guy (Dem). Advisor to folks crazy enough to launch startup biotech companies. Friend to the disenfranchised. Passionate opponent of COVID denial. Dog guy. Pray without words.

Open letter to my NC state Rep. B. Ray Jeffers (Durham), expressing my disappointment in his sponsorship of HB347, which would legalize online bookies' operations and highly addictive sports gambling in NC. If your state Representative is on this list of HB347's co-sponsors please join me in writing to express your disapproval. You can find your state Rep's email address at https://www.ncleg.gov/FindYourLegislators
“Tactical patience." Great article about how a Texas election official works with sincere believers of voter fraud myths to help counter their false perceptions and conspiracy theories about the election process. https://texas.votebeat.org/2022/11/14/23454111/heider-garcia-tarrant-county-election-transparency
How this Texas election official is winning voters’ trust

In the face of their suspicions and threats, Heider Garcia didn’t fight back. He welcomed them in and listened.

THREAD: Why we should offer covid vax to 6 months - 5 year olds...

TLDR: this age group LESS likely to have protection from prev infection than other ages, MORE likely to need hospital & ICU than older children and young adults & safe vaccines exist 1/11

OK! We seem to have plateaued at "as bad as it was last August" which is better than 2 weeks ago but hardly ideal.

These are the Covid-19 wastewater surveillance numbers for Wake, Durham, and Orange counties in central NC. The chart covers roughly the past year. The dataset is updated weekly, and there is a 1-week lag on top of that, so the latest data here are from mid-week a week ago.

#OTD in 1960, four Black university students sat down at a lunch counter in a segregated F. W. Woolworth Company store and refused to leave until they were served. They were denied service, but they came back every day for weeks with more and more people, eventually forcing desegregation in the service industry and leading to the formation of the SNCC.

As I contemplate leading a new organization (more on that soon), I find myself ever more frequently reflecting on the vast time & brainpower fruitlessly consumed by poor communications - especially PowerPoints. This great article, citing the famed communicator Edward Tufte's work, illustrates what I mean: Death by PowerPoint: The Slide That Killed 7 People. Death by PowerPoint: the slide that killed seven people — mcdreeamie-musings

We’ve all sat in those presentations. A speaker with a stream of slides full of text, monotonously reading them off as we read along. We’re so used to it we expect it. We accept it. We even consider it ‘learning’. As an educator I push against ‘death by PowerPoint’ and I'm fascinated with how we

The thing about virtual food is that five minutes after eating it you're hungry again.
Alas, the volunteer-powered non-profit free service that collected and published ADS-B flight-tracking aircraft data (and that was the data source depended on by @elonjet) has been sold to a private equity firm. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/01/the-flight-tracker-that-powered-elonjet-has-taken-a-left-turn/

ADS-B Exchange is now owned by private equity—and now even its biggest fans are bailing.
