I'm old enough now that I've seen this cycle go around a couple of time, chronic afflictions described as character flaws and bad personal choices - even by doctors and public health authorities - right up until they can be diagnosed and treated. And then the conversation turns into "well, we spent thirty years telling you this was your fault as an indigent, malingering moral failure, but here, take this pill" and we wonder where the distrust and quackery comes from.
