I read books. I read a lot of books. I have weird friends. I have a ton of different interests. I read even more books. I'm a full-time librarian at a library on an Air Force base. I sometimes forget I have social media profiles. I have a cat.

Just finished "Overdue: Reckoning with the Public Library" by Amanda Oliver. A good example of what burnout looks like in librarianship, from someone who worked at an inner city library for nine months, saw the worst parts of the field, and then bailed.

Very meandering, but had some good points about libraries being ill-equipped for managing the unhoused and other social issues.

AltLovesBooks's review of Overdue

3/5: I’m conflicted by this book. On one hand, it’s supremely good at showing what burnout in librarianship can look like, particularly in large cities. Libraries are being asked to shoulder an enormous burden that’s only getting larger, without getting the support it needs to do so. It’s no wonder that librarians everywhere are experiencing a great deal of burnout and disillusionment with the field they started in, and it’s unfair of other librarians to shame them for doing so. I thought a lot of points the author brings up about the unhoused and the constant struggle between helping them where...

Just finished "The Measure" by Nikki Erlick. Kind of really loved this one.

Everyone gets a box that inside tells them how long they have to live. Would you look?

A character-driven piece about how people/society would react, coping with death, love, loss, how to live your life knowing what's coming, etc. An oddly hopeful book, despite its themes.

AltLovesBooks's review of The Measure

5/5: ”The measure of your life lies within.” Imagine you had a box whose contents would tell you almost exactly how long your life was. Imagine everyone did. Would you look? How would you react? Would you treat people with shorter lives differently? Would it change your outlook on life? This book explores those questions through the points of view of several people, who all come together, either directly or indirectly, through a support group for people with shorter lives ahead of them. We get to know the (large) cast, and essentially this book tells each of their stories through their own POV ...

I finished Sanderson's "Frugal Wizard's Handbook for Surviving Medieval England" yesterday. Kind of a letdown. A bit too goofy for me (0 of 5 stars), and the main character was bland and uninteresting. Not really what I expect out of Sanderson.

The artwork in the special edition we purchased was stellar though.

AltLovesBooks's review of The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England

3/5: "The more I've studied history, the more I've maintained that great achievements aren't so much about aptitude as about timing." This one never really came together for me. I had similar concerns going into Tress of the Emerald Sea, but I ended up finding it pretty charming in the end after I'd spent some time with it. This one lacked that charming part, and just felt a bit of a chore to get through. It just wasn't what I expect out of Sanderson, and even beyond that, it was just....fine. Even reading it blind without knowing who the author was, I probably wouldn't rate it much higher. I'...

I finished "The Palace of Illusions" by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni yesterday, a retelling of the Mahabharat from the point of view of Panchaali. Loved the writing and the setting, but enjoyed the first half more than the second half. Vengeance gets repetitive to read about after so long, but I suspect that's more from the source material than anything else.

AltLovesBooks's review of The Palace of Illusions

4/5: "She who sows vengeance must reap its bloody fruit." I don’t read much Indian fiction. I think to date, I’ve only read two of this author’s previous works, The Forest of Enchantments and Independence. I mostly enjoyed both of those with some caveats, and I think this one was no exception. I can’t say I know the source material at all, and from a quick glance at the reviews, I can see the low reviews come from a place of not liking aspects of the retelling. I only mention this to say that I don’t know the retelling at all, and I thought this was an enjoyable, flawed story. Panchaali was bo...

My library aide at work created a kids display for Shark Week yesterday. I thought I'd paint a rock and add it to her display on Monday.

Finished "Old God's Time" by Sebastian Barry. 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Not a fan at all. Stream of consciousness writing, graphic depictions of childhood sexual trauma, just not my thing. Good writing, the author clearly knows his craft, just unsure who to recommend it to without a ton of caveats.

Finished "The Truffle Underground" by Ryan Jacobs yesterday. 4 out of 5 stars.

I know I implied last week that I wasn't enjoying it, but I actually found it to be an incredibly interesting read. Lots of truffle history I never knew, and the lengths people go to in order to get an upper hand is kind of crazy. Stealing/poisoning truffle dogs is especially evil.
