Think I’ve finally cracked home made hot cross buns. They might not look perfect but they’re pretty tasty. #GoodFriday #HotCrossBuns

#Introduction

Hello! We are The Carpentries, an organisation committed to building global capacity in essential data and computational skills for conducting efficient, open, and reproducible research.

You can find out more about us at:https://carpentries.org/about/

About Us

The Carpentries is a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives, a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organisation based in California, USA. We are a global community teaching foundational computational and data science skills to researchers in academia, industry and government.

Eigg isn't connected to the UK national grid. Instead we generate 90% to 95% of our electricity from wind, sun, & water (hydro). Community-owned Eigg Electric was switched on in 2008. Islanders are trained and employed to manage it. Electricity costs 28p per unit/kWh. Before 2008 each property had its own diesel generator. Now we have 24kW of wind, 110kW of hydro, 170kW of solar PV, storage batteries, and a back up generator. Next challenge is #netzero #renewables #eigg http://isleofeigg.org/eigg-electric/
Eigg Electric - The Isle of Eigg

Eigg is not connected to the mainland electricity supply.  After decades of diesel generators, Eigg Electric provided 24 hour power for the first time in February 2008.  Eigg Electric is a community owned, managed and maintained company which provides electricity for all island residents from the renewable sources of water, sun, and wind.   No more pouring smelly […]

I am Marion (Bendig) Weinzierl (she/her), https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2302-5476.

I currently work as Senior #RSE at Advanced Research Computing, Durham University, UK (@arc_du). I am #RSEng Theme Leader at N8 CIR and co-founder and chapter co-lead of the N8 CIR #WHPC chapter.

My background is in #SciComp and I like building and fiddling with simulation pipelines. (If I need to write another bespoke parameter file parser I'll scream, though.)

I also end up organsing events and training a lot.

🧵THREAD:

I have a joke about Sisyphus.

Today I'm off work on #UCUstrike. Thinking about the standard academic career path. People could leave school at 16 and go get a job, but they choose to study further, to specialise more. They get A levels, don't stop. They specialise more, get an undergraduate degree. They don't stop then either. They continue to a PhD, usually getting a Master's first. Then...
