Musician and composer.

Arrived as an immigrant in the US with big ideas: a podcast about my journey to find a musical life in a new country. Caught Covid on the trip. (Yes I wore a mask.) Isolating for days and now at the boredom stage. I read an article about Mastodon and thought, "why not?" Maybe there still is a place where people can be nice online.

Imagine if all 7 of these nations stood together. If they really stand for, or care about "one love", wouldn't that be a genuine show of unity? Would Fifa ban all these teams? Would it sanction them? If 7 European nations, suddenly looked like not playing, would Fifa be forced to think about their bottom line? Isn't that all they really care about anyway? One love, my tuchus!

Tl;dr: begins with b and rhymes with "rollocks".

Of course the commonly known history of Rock n Roll is all about the same 5 or 6 dudes. Of course there were plenty of #WomenRockers from the genre's inception.

New Web Project Immortalizes the Overlooked Women Who Helped Create Rock and Roll in the 1950s

“For sixty years, conventional wisdom has told us that women generally did not perform rock and roll during the 1950s,” writes Leah Branstetter, Ph.D. candidate in musicology at Case Western Reserve University.

So many people are having a bad first experience with Mastodon because they're using the official app which is lacking features, doesn't allow image uploads randomly, has random slowness, and doesn't give you easy access to the two most active feeds where you can find people (Local and Federated).

Please switch to Metatext, Tusky, or Tooot for a better mobile experience (or even use a browser).

Out of the >15k users that joined this week, over 11k are on the official apps.

To jump on the "I'm new here and I don't have a clue" train, what are suggestions for the best interface for Mastodon? I started in my browser, then got cocky and downloaded an app (android), leading me to totally miss my notifications for 2 days. I was trying to be patient, as many have advised. Now I feel like I spent the party waiting at the back door, aa everyone else piled in the front.

Here's your irregular reminder that:

Twitter was a multi-billion dollar company with thousands of employees.

Mastodon is a niche hobbyist product run by volunteers

The fact that we're being seen as a viable alternative to them is an admission that a federated, decentralized future is not only possible, but desirable.

Mastodon is not one thing, or one place. It's a network of many things and many places. We don't have a spokesperson (I mean, there's me. I'm the official spokesperson for 💯 of the fediverse, but beyond me there is no spokesperson) we don't have consensus on moderation or blocking or tools or what is good and what is bad. Some of us are professional SREs and Sysadmins, some of us aren't. Some of our instances have been around for 5+ years, some won't be here in six months.

And that's good! All of it, every last bit of it is good.

We're wrestling power away from the billionaire class, in real time, and reclaiming it for the People.

People grumbling that #Mastodon is slow at the moment... You just turned up with 1 million people in a tiny, rural village and you're complaining there's a queue to get into the only tearoom, which is run by gay pensioners Babs & Maureen as a retirement hobby on Mons-Weds. Relax!

When following back people here, I’m noticing a lot of people haven’t posted anything yet.

If you can’t think of anything to write just yet, then do consider just reblogging (=retweeting!) good content that you see around. You could start with this post, for example, to encourage more people to start sharing content around here.

BTW, as we get the Bylines publications going on here, that will provide ample good news content for the community. 👍👍

I imagine everyone here to be cooler and better informed than I, but if anyone missed it, this is the best informed discussion about Elon and the bird site. Kara Swisher probably knows them both better than anyone.
