You may remember reading about the plastic surgeon, Dr. Elisabeth Potter, who was doing a breast reconstruction when she was called out of surgery by United Healthcare to explain why the patient needed an overnight hospital stay.

Well, Dr. Potter has a lot more to say about how the insurance side of medical care works, from a doctor’s perspective. And it’s horrible. For starters:

“It's things like getting a preauthorization for a surgery. I employ two people full-time just to get authorizations for me to do necessary medical procedures for women affected by breast cancer. … They tell me what type of implants I can place, and it varies from insurance to insurance.”

And wait until you read about the peer-to-peer calls, where the supposed peer has no relevant expertise:

I say, "Well, I'd like to talk to you about diep flap surgery." And I hear a pause, and then I say, "Do you know what a diep flap is?" And they say no.

She Exposed the Insurance Industry’s Worst Behavior. Now They’re Coming After Her.

Dr. Elisabeth Potter went viral after accusing UnitedHealthcare of interfering with cancer surgery. She’s still speaking out—despite legal threats.

❗️Authoritarianism, #Texas MAGA style

"A Texas lawmaker found herself effectively stuck in her seat Monday, planted on the House floor after refusing to sign a political "permission slip"—a GOP-mandated form requiring Department of Public Safety escorts for Democrats who broke quorum over redistricting."

As early observer of @governor.ca.gov's efforts to find different ways to message, I had complained his podcast outreach was largely a sausage-fest, focused on men's podcasts. This, a great interview with Heather Cox Richardson, is a welcome departure. open.substack.com/pub/heatherc...

Letters from an American
"The Department of Health and Human Services recently announced it would wind down 22 mRNA vaccine development projects under the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, or BARDA, halting nearly $500 million in investments. This decision undercuts one of the most significant medical advances in decades, technology that could protect millions more from the threats ahead":

Giving up on mRNA is a dangerous decision.

"I was gonna play until I was 40 or 45," Andrew Luck tells me.

To which I said, "Wait a minute, what?"

After it was over, he found himself in a fog. "I can't be 30 years old and retired. This is ridiculous."

Then something pulled him out of it: https://nytimes.com/athletic/65492…

Luck walked out on one locker room that needed him. He wasn't ready to walk away from another.

Stop being afraid. #fear

@SharonCrockett I love this! (I’m also stealing it.)
@DebR I hope enough Americans (especially Republicans) heed this message. This is not the time to show fear.
@SharonCrockett
Könnten wir das bitte auch auf deutsch haben?
@villon
@SharonCrockett @blogdiva I find the ways these memes are edited really interesting. I can’t recall what the placard originally said, but the original photo had police in riding helmets down the bottom left, the placard was edited, and I’m not sure if the Fawkes Anonymous mask that’s in some versions was added at the same time or later. This version has had those removed through the clone tool.
@sendai @blogdiva The middle section of the placard reflects editing, for sure. There’s probably some clone stamping that was done, too. I really like the overall message, however, as edited. Everything in this world is derivative. Even some of the best “art”.
@SharonCrockett Has one of you Fedi artistes reproduced this poster? I'd love to have it but i I am not sufficiently adept at graphic design to produce a suitable facsimile. Thx
