CBC article with comments from one of our collaborators on another project, Dr JP Xu. This is a remarkable study that came out today in Science. #Bats

When bats were wiped out, more human babies died, a study found. Here's why | CBC News

Researchers found that infant deaths increased after farmers used more pesticides to battle pests when bats weren't around. The findings are part of growing evidence that humans rely on the animal and plant species around them, and are harmed when those species decline or go extinct.

It's #Leptember! Moths have been evolving ways to evade bats and bats have been adjusting strategies to keep up with the changes. The results are some amazing adaptations - like TYMBALS!
Some moth species have tiny noise makers that they use to startle attacking bats. Some may actually jam bat sonar frequencies (by making a loud sound at the same frequency as the bat call - it confuses the bat momentarily to give the moth time to drop and get out of the way).

It's #Leptember! Moths are a HUGE part of many bat diets. But did you know that moths have EARS? Tympanae are structures that allow moths to hear the echolocation calls of attacking bats (so they can dodge & avoid being eaten). #Bats #Moths #CoolScience

NEW BAT PAPER OUT! Important work completed in the western Canadian National Parks on Little Brown Myotis & roosting habitat. It's tough surviving high elevations. These bats used both natural roosts & buildings!

#HappyBatWeek! Alberta has 9 species of bats (& over half of them are currently considered endangered). To check on the "bat total" we look to http://batnames.org - a site run by bat experts who track earth's bats. Bat biodiversity is worth celebrating! #bats #biodiversity #BatWeek

Happy Baturday! More people need to learn to love bats! Around the world, bats work as pollinators, seed dispersers and more and more evidence is proving that they are significant consumers of agricultural pests (work that makes them worth billions of dollars each year)! #EndangeredWildlife #Bats #BatWeek
And just an FYI about Northern Myotis, they have seen a 98% reduction in population sizes in the eastern part of their range. White-nose syndrome has devastated popns. This species is highly dependent on old age-class trees and represents a management challenge for Forestry. Retention & recruitment of old growth management areas to support this species will be crucial in the recovery of populations. It appears that survivors of infection are maintaining numbers. #SlowRecovery #SlowReproduction
