Averill’s Year in Books

My 2019 article in the JHS is the focus of today’s @jstor Daily! https://daily.jstor.org/weaponizing-homophobia-in-ireland/ highlight of my month!
Weaponizing Homophobia in Ireland - JSTOR Daily

One of the arguments of Irish nationalism was that English rule was morally corrupting. There was no better example of this than same-sex desire.

Delighted to wake up and learn I’ve been awarded an NACBS-Gale Digital Scholar Lab Fellowship, which will support both research for my book and for generating source material to use in my St Olaf January term study abroad class, Love & Sex in Modern Ireland. Exciting!
The History of America’s Changing Political Parties - DIG

In recent years, America’s two party system has seemed more intractable than ever: Democrats vs. Republicans. Now, we have a clear idea of each party’s location on the political map: Democrats are liberal, Republicans conservative; Democrats are left-leaning, Republicans right-leaning. Right now, those truths seems so deeply entrenched that they seem almost natural - it’s

At @dig_history we often try to “double-dip” when we write episodes. Usually that means doing episodes that we can / will use for teaching. Occasionally we use these as deep dives into historiographies that are useful to our writing projects. My latest is the latter - I give you Roger Casement! https://digpodcast.org/2023/07/02/roger-casement-over-time/ #Ireland #sexuality #lgbtq #History #pride
Irish Hero, Queer Traitor, Gay Icon: Roger Casement Over Time - DIG

Pretty jazzed to officially announce that I won a 2023 NEH Summer Stipend! Finishing my book on same-sex desire in Ireland from 1922-1966, due to Temple U Press in Jan 2024 eeep

I can’t believe we just emailed our book manuscript to our editor. A @[email protected] history of Lily Dale NY coming soon* to a bookstore near you. @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected]

*LOL probably a year. It’s out of our hands now!

I started there as an 'intern' 16 years ago, worked full time during the summers while in college & grad school. New leadership wants to move all the tasks I did in-office, so my part-time status ends today. I've loved working for the farmers, and I will miss having this gig.
I authored a blog posts on weekly meal prep, how to make sugar on snow, and my favorite things about VT. I sampled SO MUCH CHEESE and looked forward to the yearly bonus: a box of Cabot products. I made some dear friends, & got at least 1 friend a job that he's grown into!
