Some UI refinements for OUTSIDE PARTIES for #Playdate...

As this GIF shows, I've added to the spooky "glitches" using the SDK's "vcrPauseFilterImage()," which runs fast and looks neat. Other random glitches include simple streaks of noise and sudden brief flashes of... things. Audio will add a lot later on.

The visual feel on hardware is somewhere between spooky found footage, a hazy ultrasound scan, and an old daguerreotype. If I can achieve a shortwave "numbers station" feel for the sound, I'll be happy!

The "Signal Log" (list of items to find) now marks found signals with a crosshair icon, while non-found signals get a "?"—or a number, if multiple instances are to be tracked down. The number decreases as you find them. Each signal is listed by its final words, which are likely to contain the most useful clues. The selected one (up/down moves the "A" badge) also gets a full-text ticker at the bottom. Hit "A" to confirm it as the signal to search for, or "B" to revert to the previously-selected signal.

It’s official! My Playtime collection of 50 weird alarm clocks for #Playdate will be coming to Catalog! I’m looking at later this spring.

I had the upcoming Stereo Dock in mind—a way to have “fun stuff” showing all the time on your Playdate. But it runs fine on battery too: it keeps going without going to sleep, until reaching a battery level of your choosing. Then (if not plugged in) it reverts to the low-power system clock so you always have charge left for gaming!

Playtime is currently on Itch—and I’m working on a little update for that version too. I have no plans for exclusive features in either version.

FYI: one day left to get the All Work and No Play bundle for #Playdate—containing the T Minus kitchen timer, Pocket Planner with calendar and voice memo recorder, my own Playtime 50 Weird Alarm Clocks collection, and Orrery, an animated 3D solar system tool. (Also, keep an eye on open in a week or so for Playtime version 2.1 with a bunch of small improvements. Updates are free for existing owners, and you can always check for updates by pressing A on the Playtime Settings screen: the first screen in the clock face gallery grid.)

I've just devlogged tons of details about OUTSIDE PARTIES, my upcoming #horror scavenger hunt for #Playdate

https://devforum.play.date/t/outside-parties-horror-scavenger-hunt-across-a-1-5-gigapixel-hdr-image/9961#top

You're searching a single MASSIVE grayscale HDR image that zooms up to 1.5 gigapixels, and the crank tunes the image in realtime to reveal details lost in light or shadow—while ALSO tuning in creepy "signals" inspired by numbers stations. The signals gradually reveal the story, while sending you on new missions to find more items in the image.

Audio Layers The Playdate (“K5 Panopticon Receiver” in the game) is not meant to be a literal shortwave radio, but something mysterious that’s akin to that. There are 11 layers of sound, of which 2 to 4 are playing at once: • UI clicks, different for different actions. • Static sounds accompanying the three kinds of brief visual glitches. Randomized pitch, and louder for bigger glitches. • Full stereo background loop, > 1 minute, while viewing the pano. (But any constant sound risks being t...

As a kid I didn't even know The Prisoner TV show existed. That didn't stop me from sneaking a flashlight under my blankets, popping in a painful hard plastic mono earphone, and playing the hell out of SEGA's Kosho!

The "All Work and No Play" bundle for #Playdate is live now through end of January on Itch. 4 non-game apps from 4 different developers, for US$4.99 (50% off):

• POCKET PLANNER by Hydra Softworks — Calendar, multiple to do lists, and voice memo recorder using your Playdate’s mic.

• ORRERY by robotinker — Scientific and astrological models of the solar system: change the date, rotate, and zoom in 3D.

• T MINUS by Dale Price — Timer with serious and silly visual and audio themes.

• And last but not least, my own PLAYTIME 2: WEIRD ALARM CLOCKS — now expanded to 50 fun clocks of all kinds, with alarm, snooze, and many customizations. (Free to update for owners of version 1.)

Playtime version 2 will be a free update later today for existing users. Find it on Itch. Here are some shots of the alarm UI:
You can limit the number of snoozes, and when the alarm goes off you get the choice whether to set the same one again for tomorrow, or just disable it completely. The alarm sound changes depending on whether snooze is enabled: the design is intended to be helpful for use by sheer habit when barely awake…
9 new clocks coming soon to Playtime version 2 for #Playdate … My collection of weird clocks is now reaching 50 in one app. And all of them will now be alarm clocks.
This one, “Signpost,” has an “analog-ish” hour marker surrounding a big minute number in my new giant-size version of my PlayDIN font. (Hour number markings and day/date can optionally be shown too.) There are also variants that use a true analog hour hand.

Are games the only way to have fun with a #playdate ? No!

Myself and 3 other developers have put together the “All Work and No Play Bundle” coming soon to Itch.

4 NON-games: Pocket Planner, Playtime Weird Clocks, Orrery, and T Minus.

Details and link will follow later this week...
