Shocking, powerful stuff from Chris Boardman and Active Travel England.

A study of over 100 cycle schemes has revealed that old-fashioned schemes (i.e. just painting the road) will 'kill 10% more people than doing nothing and you get no uptake because it doesn't make people feel safe', whereas a scheme designed to modern standards will get 'between 20-60% increase in uptake and halve the number of deaths.'

@virtuous_sloth @corporatecrimes @pluralistic There are a lot of people who could safely vote third-party without causing the Democrats to lose in their area. If someone is on the left and tired of the Democrats tacking right while counting on their vote, third-party voting for a farther left candidate is about the only way to signal that the Dems would care about
@pluralistic If the author thinks people are losing hope because they mistook the Democratic candidates for heroes, they have some incredibly naive friends. We all know we're voting for cowards who praise fracking and genocide. Why he thinks seeing that clearly would arrest suicidal thoughts is beyond me.

‘The data on extreme human ageing is rotten from the inside out’ – Ig Nobel winner Saul Justin Newman

Saul Newman’s research suggests that we’re completely mistaken about how long humans live for.

@infobeautiful This feels a lot like people just naming books they had to read in high school. They're fine, but I hardly think everyone needs to read "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "Catcher in the Rye"

Hah, today I learnt that the wireframe 'CGI' in Escape from New York, used for Snake Plissken to make a stealthy glider entry into the lawless prison island by air, was actually 'faked' by building a model of Manhattan covered in reflective tape. In 1981 this was the cheaper solution for a movie with limited budget
@dpiponi @lindsey There never comes to be a traditional plot with some singular difficulty to overcome, but I stayed pretty fascinated with the way the characters were developed. You can also get a book that's a combination Babel-17 and Empire Star, which are two shorter, more plotted Samuel Delaney stories. I'd recommend them
