AI's #energy use is significant but unclear, due to variability in models and lack of transparency from tech giants. Training #AI like GPT-3 for example consumes massive electricity, with its overall environmental impact still uncertain. Projections suggest AI's electricity demand could rise sharply, urging a need for greater openness, efficiency, and questioning AI's essential uses for sustainability. https://www.theverge.com/24066646/ai-electricity-energy-watts-generative-consumption
How much electricity does AI consume?

Calculating the energy cost of generative AI can be complicated — but even the rough estimates that researchers have put together are sobering.

People: There are literally trillions of lines of human text available for free in the public domain, to say nothing of the living present day authors who would LOVE to be part of an "AI" project if they were a) allowed to consent to it and b) fairly compensated FOR it, so to claim that these companies would have to endure too much inconvenience without scraping copyrighted works is just absurd on its face.

This argument is like Tonya Harding thinking to herself that it's impossible for her to be the greatest ice skater of all time and inspire a generation without paying someone to hit that pesky Nancy Kerrigan in the knee with a pipe! There's just no other choice!

Silliness.

A quick thread on #AIhype and other issues in yesterday's Gemini release:

#1 -- What an utter lack of transparency. Researchers form multiple groups, including @meg and @timnitGebru when they were at Google, have been calling for clear and thorough documentation of training data & trained models since 2017.

In Bender & Friedman 2018, we put it like this:

It simply is impossible for one's work to be based on analyzing the harms of AI systems & ignore what the Israeli state does to Palestinians.
Heidy Khlaaf writes: "If AI labs are to consistently invoke exaggerated fears through comparisons to nuclear hazards, then they must be willing to take the analogy to completion. Ironically, if they were to explore the readily available safety mechanisms for nuclear components, they would be pressed to find inflammatory language supporting the use of terminology such as “extinction” and “existential risks”.

How AI Can Be Regulated Like Nuclear Energy

AI labs compare AI risk on par with the existential and safety risks of nuclear, yet they dismiss regulations.

Alex de Vries, a data scientist at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, found that AI companies could soon use as much power as a country worldwide.
