why do US banks offer “checking” accounts when no one pays by cheque anymore

why do AU banks offer “savings” accounts with 0-0.01% interest rates

🤔

I love online shopping logic sometimes

“Because you bought an oven/iPad/dining table/compost bin, here’s a dozen more ovens/iPads/dining tables/compost bins we think you’ll like”

… 🤪

At least my electorate is being called for the Yes vote, so I can be proud of my local community I guess... #theVoice #voiceToParliament #ausPol
Gutted. What kind of fear-driven, backward-minded result even is this. 😔 #theVoice #voiceToParliament #ausPol

just got that sweet sweet privacy-invading Chrome update on my work computer ✨👌🏼

PSA: once you see this on opening Chrome after an update, to turn it off, run-don’t-walk to Settings → Privacy and security → Ads privacy and then go into all 3 sub-options (Ad topics, Site-suggested ads, and Ad measurement) and disable them all individually 🤪

this is also a great opportunity for organisations to really scrutinise their choice of Chrome as the default/“standard” browser surely 🤔🏢

(for those not in the know: the real-world translation of Google’s “more choice over the ads you see” messaging is actually their new deeply-integrated user profiling and tracking ad platform built into Chrome that “will track the web pages you visit and generate a list of advertising topics that it will share with web pages” by default) 👀😕 via https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/09/googles-widely-opposed-ad-platform-the-privacy-sandbox-launches-in-chrome/

Google gets its way, bakes a user-tracking ad platform directly into Chrome

Chrome now directly tracks users, generates a “topic” list it shares with advertisers.

just realising if I move all the home nbn and mobile devices from Telstra to Vodafone it’ll save like 72 bucks a month with minimal/no impact to local coverage/service/speed and gain more than double the mobile data… might be something worth trying, given they also support all the nice stuff like iPhone Visual Voicemail (unlike Optus!), data sharing/pooling, and Apple Watch Cellular 👀

… although my only hesitation is: is Vodafone’s AU real-world coverage better than it used to be? I only remember the old horror stories from early 4G days and don’t know much about current experiences 🤔

It’s hard to imagine which would hurt more - the torn flesh, the fractured bone or the anguish of knowing you couldn’t reach your two young cubs; alone, hungry and unprotected.
