When we look at the Stroop effect, it shows that perception intertwines with language - it's not that we couldn't see the colors, but the signals got mixed with semantic systems. #DataViz isn't only a perceptual exercise, but a semantic one we fill with our intents.

We really need to discuss how much we pay with our data under #DataEthics. Not only does @disneyplus demand my birthdate, but gender as well. This is REQUIRED to keep streaming so that I can be marketed to under a really crappy clustering analysis.
Forced data collection generates garbage data. My usage statistics provide far more insight than this will provide. Continued overreach like forced collection of this data will continue to inspire more laws.

Languages make use of iconicity and abstraction. Onomatopoeia is one way #languages represent a sound: shushing, clucking, purring, etc mirror the sounds they represent with phonemes available from the language.
#DataVis also has iconicity and abstraction. Bar #charts are iconic, representing literal stacks, while lines are surprisingly abstract. The stacks of books in the line pull your focus from the trend to the values - iconicity. #DataViz #FunctionalAestheticsTheBook
