Just explained to TJ how he can get ebooks and audiobooks from the library on his tablet, and he doesn't have to worry about losing them. SFPL took away his library card years ago because he kept losing books he checked out. Now he's gonna go see if he can get a card again so he can listen to audiobooks on his tablet.
So basically no, Ja is not a "thug" or a "gangster." He probably hasn't even broken any laws.
But in this unnecessarily violent and racist country that we choose to live in, he could make different choices that would serve him better. His current choices could wind up putting his career or his life in danger.
Yes, we can ask "Why should Morgan Wallen be allowed to open carry into a country music bar, and Ja can't open carry into a hip hop club?" That... may be the most American question ever.
Want to reduce crypto scams? Make US government insured finance work as well for Black folk as white folk.
Want more drivers to have salaries and benefits? Make cabs and public transportation work as well for Black folk as white folk.
Want more small, local retail? Make small, local retail work as well for Black folk as white folk.
If you understand white US history, you'll understand why reducing racism helps bring about the healthier economic balance we all seek, and ignoring it, hurts it.
