OK, so this is the initiating stage in moving from mastodon.social to mastodon.ie as my home base.

Don't be surprised if you find you started following me with my .social address and I suddenly pop up as the .ie one. That will be due to witchcraft, run by the elephant mages who make the site work.

Everyone else: #Mastodon is really complex and has a lot of questions around who can see your DMs and what instance should you join and how do you find people and why toot instead of tweet and how do we monetise it and...

#IrishTwitter:

Let's be honest. Those 250,000 new account-holders are likely some of the very heaviest tweeters in existance.

And once they're gone, the attention they used to give to Twitter isn't going to come back.

You can have accounts in more than one place. But you have a finite amount of attention.

We know you're famous, we know you're celebrities, and we know you're accustomed to being treated like the cream of the crop - but this is our network and we have an important rule of etiquette:

Please put your news under a Content Warning

If you're talking about Ukraine, use a cw "Ukraine". If it's about a school shooting, use "school shootings", or "school violence". If it's about us politics, use "US politics" or "US pol".

If you're talking about Twitter, please use "Twitter". I'm not kidding. Do you know how stressing it has been for us to deal with this whole thing? We're sick tired of hearing Twitter news. YOU ARE the twitter news. The last thing we need is to see someone boosting a distressing piece of info that isn't safely hidden under a title.

For you it may seem like it's a bureaucratic hassle, but for us it's our mental health where talking about.

There are people with PTSD in here. There are people with burnout. We value mental health and we value consent.

We don't like content being shoved down our throats.

If you want an analogy, consider your stuff Mordor News and we're hobbits from the Shire.

Just because you're big personalities doesn't give you the right to ignore our customs and do whatever the hell you want anyway.

Consider the fact that we left Twitter for a reason. It's not merely the platform, it's not merely Musk, it's not merely the corporation; it's Twitter's toxic culture that we ran away from.

This is our cozy home. We do not starve for content and we're not addicted to engagement in here. We do not like quote tweets, we do not like naked screenshots. We do not like noise.

This is NOT Twitter; Mastodon is a very different beast. This platform is already over 5 years old and its culture is entirely different from yours. We have cozy little instances where we find comfort, friends, and peace.

You arrived unannounced to our virtual piece of land, and we expect you to at least have the decency of learning our customs.

Thank you.

Thing is, those seeming millions are a very shallow pool of people.

Twitter produced an internal report that said ""heavy tweeters" account for less than 10% of monthly overall users but generate 90% of all tweets and half of global revenue."

And what's a heavy Tweeter?
"someone who logs in to Twitter six or seven days a week and tweets about three to four times a week"

...uh, OK so what does that make the #TwitterMigration people?

“Tweets? Where we're going Marty they're called toots.” #IrishTwitter

I don’t think the bare numbers tell the full story as to how serious the jump in Mastodon users in a #TwitterMigration are for the Bird platform.

After all, apparently “230,000 joined in the last week” per https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-63534240. Many of them- most of them- will still have their old Twitter account active. I know I do.
And, for a service that claims 228 million users, what’s a quarter mil between friends?

Twitter users jump to Mastodon - but what is it?

The little-known social network's user base has swelled after Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter.

It looks like I could be the only #IrishTraveller here yet so I really need allies to boost my posts to create visibility and more solidarity.
@natural20 there you are now!

Adventures in tinned fish. For when shops and cooking just seems insurmountable.

Microwaved two small spuds.
Wafer thin sliced a quarter onion, and two forkfuls of one of those mini tuna tins.

Peel the steamed spuds, chop fine, toss with tuna and onion in mayo. Drizzle a bit of the anchovy’s olive oil in to enrichen. Pepper.
