In this case, I think there are two presumptions the students were acting on.
1) they’ve had their minds blown in science classes b4, so anything is possible.
2) they can trust their teacher not to deliberately deceive then.

Sorry for your loss by the way. That’s awful. No one should go out bc of reluctance to see a doctor.

That’s not really an option though.
We’re awake now, & going back to sleep will only lead to pain & death actually occurring instead of mere dread.

As for being clever or being right, it’s much better to admit when we might be wrong instead of trying to clever our way out of it.

Reminds me of a story abt a teacher suspending a metal plat w/one side over a candle. Teach has student touch sides to find the side w/candle is cooler.
They make guesses…
