Gotta new video today for ya.
It's time to make fun of RCA again!

The Numitron: An obvious idea that wasn't very bright

@TechConnectify the George Mason patent diagram is wonderfully weird
@th @TechConnectify I instantly want something like that 😀
@th @TechConnectify Biblically accurate segment display.

@TechConnectify Related weird-but-somewhat-terrible-tech: my LG dishwasher has a 7-segment display which tries to trick you into thinking it’s an LCD which is emulating a 7-segment display.
@foo thanks I hate it
@TechConnectify
Did you do a series of Bash tutorials for Geek's Lesson about 4 years ago? I ask because the host's voice sounds like you.
@foo @TechConnectify my parents' old Jeep had a trip computer that did something like this when displaying the temperature and heading.
@TechConnectify Great band name. "Tuesday at the Black Cat, Seven Segment Display along with 60 Cycle Hum, doors open at 8:30"
@mikej @TechConnectify 60 Cycle Hum is already a YouTube channel... about guitars

@leonidas @TechConnectify As a former sound guy I always thought it a great name for a band. Call the first album Ground Loop.

And rename yourself in the UK.

@TechConnectify Reading through old industry magazines reveals a wonderfully weird world of strange displays, each trying to fill its own niche. For example CRT displays for computers have their own problems as you need to refresh them regularly.
@TechConnectify There were things like CRTs which exposed film which then was developed and projected onto a wall... in a fully automated process.
@TechConnectify And how many segments do you need to do the hair of The Police?
@TechConnectify I wonder if they got some 'certification' thing going, along the lines of 'you use light bulbs in your system, so you can use these without having to do new certification'.
(Either that or a desperate use for the growingly redundant vacuum tube line)
@TechConnectify "rocket surgeon"? What is this, Brain Science? :)

@TechConnectify I think there was no reason for RCA to put more effort into making those.

They already knew there were multiple better technologies that would become viable in a few years, so they just quickly came up with a cheap stopgap solution.

Also, regarding those silly "selling points" in the datasheet - what if they were trolling?

What if the entire product line was a joke to see if the management will let them ship something stupid?

@TechConnectify This was a good episode. The moment I saw the RCA logo ion the thumbnail I knew this was going to be a pleasant dumpster fire. Though I'd have to agree with you, there IS some weird charm to the Numitron. Like, they tried, and it's definitely funky in a 70s sort of way.

@TechConnectify It's the gray background that really gets me  Like. Why?

Meanwhile it's 2024. Numitrons with vantablack backgrounds please

@TechConnectify Numitron, finally answering the question “What if Nixie tubes were bad?”.

(I want some of them now of course.)

@TechConnectify Rocket Surgeon. Love it!

@TechConnectify The gray background was the most puzzling one. Wonder how it would have worked with one of those super black paints now available.

I sometimes wonder how good old tech would be if we used modern manufacturing.

@TechConnectify "I've always been fascinated with the idea of building 7-segment displays out of weird things. Imagine a clock where each segment is a 4 foot fluorescent tube"

yes
I have done this a looong time ago and it's a nightmare to get the high frequency drive of the tubes right and if I'd do it now I would probably predict when to change digits (if it's a clock) to pre-heat the filaments to strike the tubes flicker-free.

@TechConnectify wonderful video as always. Did any actual products ever use these?
@TechConnectify
Somehow these kinds of weird displays even with their flaws and whatnot have a charm that I couldn't resists, 😍 Yeah it's a simple and badly designed weird product that looks janky, but still really cool.😎
Now I desperately want to have some of this Numitrons.
@TechConnectify FYI the "interesting Components" in the latest video on the count down timer (Here's what Numitron tubes in an actual product look like) look to be Rifa capacitors. (you can almost make out the logo thats hidden by the case) If you plan to use this at all in the future you will want to replace those with modern equivalents. I'm not the type to say "replace all capacitors" but those will almost certainly fry and release the blue smoke.
