Attempting to move this account to the Hackaday.social server in a bit. My first server move, hope this works like I think it should. 🤞
Here's what I've learned about using Mastodon (please correct me if I'm wrong) and add!
1. Don't be picky about boosting because that's how others finally see it.
2. Follow as many people as I can (and try to go on federated and follow there so I'm not just local ... )
3. Follow #
4. Let go of the experience at Twitter and stop trying to find it here, this place is different
5. I can edit! :)

Since Mastodon saw its initial popularity circa 2017, I've noticed that most users and those reporting on it either don't think about the Fediverse as anything more than Mastodon, or treat its history as beginning with Eugen Rochko and the beginning of Mastodon. In fact, Mastodon is the latest in a long line of federated social networks going at least back to Identi.ca, and though I wasn't around for all of it, I find this history pretty interesting. (Thread; boosts welcome!)

I do not like that site of birds
I do not like its awful words

I do not like what it became
I do not like its cult of shame

I do not like intrusive ads
I do not like the vapid fads

I do not like the clout it’s given
I do not like its algorithm

But I shall miss that weird bird town
I do not like it burning down

If you enjoy someone's post on #Mastodon go ahead and click the star. If someone tells you that's meaningless because there's no #algorithm, ignore them. Sure, boost the post too if you want others to also see the post, but don't think telling someone you like what they posted is somehow unimportant. In real life I don't tell someone, "good job," or "well said," or "I love that," for the sake of some algorithm, I do it because I'm human and they are too. It's fundamental to being truly social.
Earlier this year I filmed a video with Tested and it’s out today! Check it out on their YouTube, and if you have a Quest you can watch the VR episode we shot too! https://youtu.be/JpykcHoEYGA

New homeowner tips: have a big plant you don't like in your yard and want to get rid of it?

Find your nearest neighbors with the same plants and ask if they want yours; free for the taking.

I just watched my neighbor pay their gardener to dig every rose bush out of my yard for me. 🌹

Reflections after 24 hours on #Mastodon... It's so chill. I didn't really recognize what the onslaught of incessant advertising was ruining the social network experience. It's *so refreshing* to come here and just see measured and meaningful conversations. I also see plenty of reflections by users that this is not a universal experience, so maybe it has something to do with me running my own server and really only seeing content from people I follow. But so far, its a breath of fresh air.
