@Retroprincess late to this party bit try pushing down on the top of the plug disc and turning it counter clockwise (a pair of rubber gloves helps get more grip). If it works you can get at the pop up mechanism.

That is such an incredible example of a moment in popular culture captured for history. The idea of the Working Men's Club is almost completely lost, so to see it represented on TV as a showcase for popular acts (and Bernard Manning) is fascinating.
