JUST POSTED: "Japan Crosses the Rubicon." With barely any notice from US media but with the full backing of the Biden administration, LDP Japan has embraced an enemy counter-strike strategy for the first time since its defeat in 1945. Despite the US support, many in Japan are not happy. And in South Korea, Japan's embrace of a counter-strike capability has raised serious concerns about sovereignty from both left & right.
My final article for the year.

Japan Crosses the Rubicon
With barely any notice from the US media, Japan's conservative LDP government has embraced a counter-strike strategy - giving it the ability to strike enemy bases overseas - for the first time since 1945. The announcement has sparked protests in South Korea and Japan and generated outrage in North Korea and China. The first of a two-part article.
THE SHORROCK FILESThanks in part to the editorJeff Sharlet, I published this article in 2003 during the Iraq War. It's kind of my masterpiece about my life as a missionary kid in Cold War Japan. It includes pictures of US occupation-era Japan taken by my late dad. "Red Flags and Christian Soldiers."

This story was written in 2002 at the beginning of the Iraq War and first published in Killing the Buddha, the great website on everything religious edited by Jeff Sharlet. It ran as the United

THE SHORROCK FILESOne of the many examples of hidden history that I've collected on my newly designed website - 45+ years of reporting on many fronts, from South Korea to New Orleans. "How a group of black militants, hippies and anarchists tried to save New Orleans."

Saving New Orleans (2005)
Seeing Common Ground: How a group of black militants, hippies and anarchists tried to save New Orleans I wrote this story in 2005 after spending nearly a month in New Orleans. Parts of it were
THE SHORROCK FILESHoly shit, I just realized I arrived in DC exactly 40 YEARS AGO TODAY to work as a journalist. Guess it's about time to publish this story, which has a good ending. But a lot of water under the bridge since then. I mean, a lot.
Bruce Springsteen's interview on HBO with Howard Stern is one of the best I've ever heard. Stern got him to talk about the craft and spirituality of his music and his early days starting out with a shitty old guitar after hearing Elvis & The Beatles, circa 1964.👍

In the mountains near the DMZ in South Korea. The buildings in the distance are part of the US Army's Camp Casey, once home to the US 2nd Infantry Division. It's now a base for a small US artillery unit. The rest of the force has moved south to Camp Humphrey, the largest US military base outside of North America. The town here is called Dongducheon, and has a colorful and also dark history as one of the largest "camp towns" around US bases in Korea. Photo taken on my last trip to Korea in 2018.
Just posted: "The Korea Peace Process: A Ten-Year Timeline." After the latest escalation in Korea, the military confrontation at the DMZ and tensions between the US and North Korea are now higher than they’ve ever been. This timeline helps explain how we got here. And by examining the past, it shows a way out. The photo shows President Clinton meeting North Korea's top general at the White House in 2000 - the closest we ever got to a peace and denuclearization agreement.
