With barely any notice from US media but with the full backing of the Biden administration, LDP Japan has embraced an enemy counter-strike strategy for the first time since its defeat in 1945. Despite the US support, many in Japan are not happy. And in South Korea, Japan's embrace of a counter-strike capability has raised serious concerns about sovereignty from both left & right.

The announcement has sparked protests in South Korea and Japan and generated outrage in North Korea and China. The first of a two-part article.
