Perceptions and experiences of extreme heat - research survey

The objective of this study is to understand how extreme heat is perceived and experienced by healthcare staff. The study will explore how these perceptions and experiences differ between healthcare systems, seeking to understand the drivers of risk perception.

Had a brilliant and enlightening time at the UK Alliance for Disaster Research annual conference this week - ‘2030 and beyond’. As we hit the Sendai mid-term review, where next? How do we promote more investment in resilience? How do we bridge the gap between climate change and disaster risk reduction?

Excited to find a disaster research shelf in Blackwell Books Oxford but a little disappointed to find it titled ‘Natural Disasters’. The irony of finding Ilan Kelman’s great ‘Disaster by Choice’ on said shelf was not lost on me. #nonaturaldisasters

During May & June 2023 Canada witnessed exceptionally extreme #fire weather conditions, leading to extensive #wildfires.

#Climatechange made the fire season severity around 50% more intense, and seasons of this severity at least 7x more likely to occur.

In today’s #climate, intense fire weather like this is a moderately extreme event, expected to occur once every 20-25 years. This means in any given year such an event is expected with 4-5% probability.

Before steamships came along, sailing ships like Cutty Sark went pretty much everywhere, and they weren’t dependent on hopping between fossil fuel depots. They had less clockwork-like predictability, but greater freedom, lower costs & zero emissions. And now the shipping industry is making a serious effort to regain some of those advantages:

“A cargo ship fitted with giant, rigid British-designed sails has set out on its maiden voyage”

Let's talk about the "Weaponization of Government". As a researcher of disinformation, it's been both frustrating and enlightening to become the target of disinformation. The old playbooks for how to respond to this stuff (often advocating strategic silence) are broken. But we're just figuring out how to fight back. Here's my statement detailing how the House Judiciary Committee mischaracterized my voluntary service on an advisory committee to weave a false narrative: https://www.cip.uw.edu/2023/08/23/starbird-house-judiciary-committee-report/
Addressing falsehoods and the manipulated narrative of House Judiciary Committee Majority document: “The Weaponization of CISA: How a ‘Cybersecurity’ Agency Colluded With Big Tech and ‘Disinformation’ Partners to Censor Americans”

Kate Starbird provides key context that is missing from a U.S. House committee’s interim report, explains some of the tactics it used to create false impressions, and provides factual informa…

Another full week spent preparing for the impact of industrial action in the English National Health Service.
Is anyone aware of research into the risk and occurrence of moral injury to staff in such periods?
