When Lynn Peterson began working as a transportation engineer, she was taught to evaluate roadway projects based only on metrics. Involving the community and collaborating with peers were never part of the discussion. Today, Peterson is a nationally recognized leader known for her approach rooted in racial equity, guided by a process of community engagement and collaboration.

She'll be speaking May 24 at Portland State University – Join us for the lecture & luncheon:

Worcester's WRTA has been running fare-free buses since March 2020 – and its ridership last year was over 20 percent higher than before the pandemic began, according to federal data:
Do you own an e-bike? Researchers at PSU and UTK want to learn why you decided to purchase an #ebike & how you use it. Take the survey and enter a drawing for a chance to win prizes: https://tinyurl.com/ebikesurvey2023
E-Bike Owner Survey

This survey is for North American e-bike owners. Responses will be used to inform policy, design, and advocacy concerning e-bikes used for both transportation and recreation.

Researchers & practitioners have called for health indicators to be used in transportation decision-making. Is it happening? Kelly Rodgers of Portland State University examined municipal transportation plans in 5 cities to see how they're using health-related indicators – and, whether framing issues from a public health perspective has an impact on policy adoption or change. In the 1970's, Portland had a dream: to create a "pleasurable human environment" by giving space to people rather than cars. Four Portland State University (PSU) students took that dream a little further this year. In the Fall 2022 term, Cameron Bennett, Owen Christofferson, Emily D’Antonio and Aidan Simpson created a Downtown Portland Living Streets Plan centered around a new street typology for Portland: Living Streets. On May 18, Taylor Li of the University of Texas at Arlington and Sirisha Kothuri of Portland State University will describe a novel method of collecting pedestrian crossing behaviors at signalized intersections using LiDAR sensors. They'll discuss findings and implications of data analytics, and introduce a novel approach to dynamic flashing yellow arrow mechanisms to reduce conflicts between left turn vehicles and crossing pedestrians. Pete Buttigieg, US Secretary of Transportation, has described the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as "notorious." For cities, it has been a challenging document to navigate to implement multimodal solutions. June 1, Peter Koonce of the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will share upcoming changes to the Manual, ideas for research to inform practice, and ways that cities can interpret data to make positive change in their community.
