Helping authors and businesses polish their text for publication: non-fiction copy-editor and proofreader. Diploma in Egyptology. Random nature photos. She/her

Fascinating study showing that writing quality affects the likelihood of papers being accepted for conferences or publication.

#edibuddies and writers in many fields will find this interesting, including Appendix C, which includes tips for making text more readable.

@moftasa @bookstodon @rabia_elizabeth yes, I like that sort too. I position them at the back of the book, rather than the front, and that makes them almost invisible from in front (but obviously not from the side, as in my photo!)
@indieauthornews I LOVED The Silent Companions! It did really spook me, though – I had to race to finish it before sunset because I 'needed' to know what happened but I also couldn't read it after dark

Anyone here who went to #EFACON2023 recently? Anyone you know live reporting from the conference? What platforms were they on? Where did people go to catch up after?

@ayeshachari There really doesn’t seem to have been much, does there, if the hashtag is anything to go by. Such a shame. Interesting to see that there’s more on X/T than Mastodon (as you’ve already discussed, Carolina did some great posts there). I hope we do eventually manage to congregate again somewhere, because we lost something valuable last autumn

We often see what we expect to see, which makes #proofreading difficult. It's even harder if there are two or three very small words next to each other. Slow down and look carefully...

Look at those clouds! 😍 I’m sitting on the balcony proofreading a PhD thesis and feeling grateful this morning

It’s #NationalBookLoversDay
Putting aside the attractions of Egyptian hieroglyphs and the subject matter, this book FEELS gorgeous. The hieroglyphs are smooth and shiny, just like a ‘normal’ book cover. But the scroll is textured and rough and… well… scroll-like. Yes I want to read the book but, to be honest, I mostly want to stroke it!

Thank goodness my friend spotted that bookshop on Saturday!

When #proofreading, don’t try to do everything at once. Check consistency of layout separately from reading for typos, for example – are chapter titles formatted consistently? Are the page margins consistent? What about the styling on graphics or boxes?

Turn pages just to look at these layout issues – you see them more easily when you're not also trying to check the content.

New favourite typo – it's amazing how much a sentence changes depending on whether you use 'Saturn' 🪐 or 'Satan' 😈 #AmEditing
