They're very common throughout the Pacific Northwest in woodland and forest areas with water nearby. I tend to see them most often during/after heavy rainfall on trails and I have to be very careful to avoid them. Here's an article if you would like some more information.

Thank you! I know very well how quiet they can be. I had an owl right next to me on a trail one time. I never heard or saw it, I only felt the wind from its wings as it flew away. πŸ˜…

Unfortunately, there might not always be an easy way to tell.
However, I would suggest checking for a description of the camera settings used for the photo. I've seen a few posts that say something like "flash", "flash triggered", "TTL flash" or "Strobe"
Sharing this information, educating people, and hopefully preventing future animal harm is the most helpful thing we can do to be animal allies in my opinion.

Thank you so much! I'm actually working on an Etsy shop right now and I will hopefully have a link to it available in a couple days. I appreciate your interest. 😊
@HikerSelma
Thank you! I took this photo with my 600mm VR lens at f/6.3 with a 1/125sec shutter speed. No tripod.
If you don't have a VR lens I would recommend using a tripod or depending on the lighting, increasing your shutter speed to at least double your focal length.
Also, if you are using a tripod make sure to use the timer function on your camera to reduce the shake of your finger pressing the shutter release button.
I hope this is helpful to you. 😊
@Krosen_nw Thank you! 😊
