I research AI tools for genealogical use, develop programs about AI genealogy, advise on AI-related matters, and produce courses and articles on the topic. It’s all about integrating AI into family history research.

All 32 of my 3rd-great-grandparents had settled into one Appalachian county by 1820 (many earlier), and 60 of my most-recent ancestors were born, lived, and died there, in Ashe County, NC.

I used Gemini 1.5 Pro Experimental 0801 to summarize Google's own 286-page antitrust ruling, i.e., Gemini explains monopoly case against its own creator. Placing the entire 526 KB monopoly finding brought by the U.S. DOJ into the System Instructions, fixing the whole doc in the context window, mitigates against hallucinations (I've found ZERO, so far. To navigate the complexities of AI use and disclosure, family historians and genealogists might consider a middle ground known as the "human rule." This rule-of-thumb suggests that if human assistance is allowed for a task, then AI assistance should also be permissible; similarly, if disclosure is required when a human helps with something, then it should also be required if AI is used.

Avoidance of catastrophe is too low a bar. My optimism springs from efforts to raise awareness, engage others to maximize benefits for all, and acknowledge, mitigate, and redress harms. A first step would be to help people face the storm rather than be caught unawares. By involving many voices in the decision-making process and acting swiftly, we can aim for those unexpected, joyous turns—eucatastrophes—that transform challenges into opportunities.

Initially, I was underwhelmed by the release of GPT-4o. But when I started hearing claims about handwritten text recognition and text-rendering inside generated images, I excited began to investigate. Here's what I discovered, some encouraging, some disappointing.
