Avoidance of catastrophe is too low a bar. My optimism springs from efforts to raise awareness, engage others to maximize benefits for all, and acknowledge, mitigate, and redress harms. A first step would be to help people face the storm rather than be caught unawares. By involving many voices in the decision-making process and acting swiftly, we can aim for those unexpected, joyous turns—eucatastrophes—that transform challenges into opportunities.
