What a peculiar essay by Jacob Browning (NYU) and Yann LeCun (recommended by @tdietterich on Twitter) with some unproductive jibes at symbolists, the humanities, and "Chomsky and his acolytes".

I guess the point is that being able to generate fluent text is not "know-how", but it reads as if there are some 1990s frustrations about the dominance of language and logic in AI and CogSci that still need venting.

It began today: ICML banned text generated by language models from the conference. NYC schools blocked teachers & students from accessing the models. Hate to say it, but this is not going to be a short-lived moral panic. It’s the start of a social conflict that will probably continue for the rest of the century. #llm
I didn't know what ICML stood for. It is the International Conference on Machine Learning, which here is forbidding the fruits of ... checks notes ... machine learning.

We had lots of papers at #emnlp2022 … and lots of us were there in Abu Dhabi in person to present them!
