Unscrupulous megacorps wanting to enslave foolish people into a parasitic system of privacy theft-for-profit *gave* the appearance of a free-for-all. That was the hook, "Free Stuff" (whether facebook pages, Youtube storage/bandwidth, or (heh) google photos storage) was the bait, and *you* were the fish.
