First? Dan Rather is old af.
Second? There's a reason why people love the Disney-fied version of King because if they featured the realness, they'd be shamed by his thoughts, words, and actions.
Third? Constantly trying to play which party is more racist using current and past distinctions of what either party is about is nonsense.
It's 'liberal' vs. illiberal and the former is the one that's the closest (but certainly not perfect) representation of the freedoms our community enjoys.
What could go wrong indeed....
Left leaning commentators:
"Reagan helped facilitate the push for institutions of higher learning to raise tuitions as a direct counter to the protests from students in the 60s, tying student debt to limiting free speech on campus and steering vulnerable people/voices away from said institutions. Eliminating student debt is one step toward evening the playing field and ensuring those voices are heard!"
Neolibs/Conservatives: That's cap.
David Frum:
B: "Let's look at the facts: it's been YEARS since you've been in a relationship and you haven't tried to pursue one"
I've been busy!
B: "No one's THAT busy."
Plus! I get touch starved!
B: "That can be fixed with intimacy with close friends. That's not a 'relationship'."
What about-
B: "We already touched up on the 'romance' part of things."
... but does it WORK like that?
B: "I mean I thi-"
Lemme check wikipedia. It might give me some insight.
B:
Brain: "So it's time we finally had this talk."
About what?
B: "Well, you know you're ace, right? I mean, you've tried to force it - were forced (read: coerced) to try it - and you KNOW it just... isn't you, yeah?"
... yeah?
B: "Maybe it's the same with romance?"
No no no. See... I like romantic things! I like the idea of that level of intimacy.
B: "Yeah! I know. But, just like with sex, you like being a font of romantic energy for others but... hate it directed at you, right?"
...
So congratulations.
You've done their work for them because you're afraid of being considered biased.
You've destroyed the public trust in, not just your individual institution, but virtually every institution of higher learning.
You've conceded ground and, thus, helped give way to Big C Conservative infiltration without them firing a single shot.
And you wonder why MLK had words about the "white moderate"...
It's even to the point that the NYPD police chief - who routinely saber rattles about protestors and criticisms about officers - couldn't find any real wrong-doing by the protesting student body.
And, yet, the university prez still presented them as a 'clear and present danger' requiring removal.
All to suspend them and get them charged with trespassing, obstruction, and lead to their swift eviction from the campus.
Mayor Eric Adams, alongside top New York Police Department officials, announced during a press conference on Thursday afternoon that police had made more than 108 arrests during the <a href="https://www.columbiaspectator.com/news/2024/04/18/shafik-authorizes-nypd-to-sweep-gaza-solidarity-encampment-as-officers-in-riot-gear-arrest-dozens/">sweep</a> of the “<a href="https://www.columbiaspectator.com/news/2024/04/17/dozens-of-protesters-occupy-south-lawn-call-for-divestment-from-israel-ahead-of-shafik-testimony/">Gaza Solidarity Encamp</a><a href="https://www.columbiaspectator.com/news/2024/04/17/dozens-of-protesters-occupy-south-lawn-call-for-divestment-from-israel-ahead-of-shafik-testimony/" target="_blank">ment</a>” on South Lawn.
So, in a way, opponents and apathetic bystanders alike are correct.
These tactics don't hit like they used to.
And that's not an indictment to the efficacy, intention, motivations of those organizing but one of the state entity and its people they are trying to motivate.
Kwame Ture said it best back then but these words, in my opinion, were seen as a harsh salvo against America and its people that was driven bias and, thus, viewed as illogical. But, in reality? He was spot on.
And when that happen, all of America fell in love with King, the movement, and their non-violent tactics.
... Psych!
Even a year later, they fucking hated his ass - https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/08/10/how-public-attitudes-toward-martin-luther-king-jr-have-changed-since-the-1960s/#:~:text=King's%20favorable%20ratings%20remained%20about,who%20viewed%20him%20highly%20unfavorably.
So why did it work?
There was still pressure put on legislators and that was largely driven, in no small part, by shame. People couldn't look away - they didn't have the luxury to anymore - and that helped the push for the VRA. Shame got shit done.
