@cstross The original weighed 30kg and the battery added another 15. You could probably get that battery down to 5kg with Li-ion technology but you'd need to take a fair bit of weight off the body and frame too. But then I'm not entirely sure what this does that a modern e-bike or trike (with better pedalling efficiency) doesn't...

Yeah, just off the top of my head the UK is very roughly between 50 and 60 degrees north and Newcastle is at 55 degrees I think.
I live in Sheffield which is just about considered to be in the north of England, and that's only 1/3 of the way up!
