I think a lot. Sometimes too much. I love learning new things about healthcare, medicine, science, and weather. Big fan of #photography, #corgis, #TheSimpsons, and my mom.
Twitter vs. Mastodon
I posted this graph on Twitter (to 95,000 followers) & Mastodon (with 1/10th the followers).
I got double the likes/boosts on Mastodon. On Twitter I got dozens of ugly replies from climate deniers & trolls. On Mastodon I got polite & interesting questions.
Properly jaw-dropping moment this evening: an e-mail from my US publisher saying that "since it's a science book", they'll publish Blue Machine WITH METRIC UNITS. So I don't have to convert everything to foot pounds per square elephant. In YEARS of writing for the US, this is the first time I have ever had a hint that there is a world outside feet and inches. Progress! #Books #Metric #Science

Rachel Carson was born in 1907. She became a marine biologist & prolific writer.

Carson questioned the assumption that humans should dominate #nature. She recognized the dangers to natural systems from the misuse of pesticides like DDT. She also accused the chemical industry of spreading lies & politicians of accepting industry claims uncritically.

Her 1962 book, Silent Spring, is widely credited as being the catalyst for the modern environmental movement. #history #science #HistoryRemix

My books are among those getting pulled off shelves, but here is why we should should care about all of them.

So... the summary is that for all the fear some people had that taxpayers would "bail out billionaires," and the corresponding fear that companies had that "a ton of our money could evaporate and destroy the economy with massive downstream impact"... FDIC/Treasury stepped in and did the right thing: depositors made whole, no taxpayer funds, bank assessment to make up any difference, & SVB equity/unsecured debtholders (mostly) wiped out.

A very good result.

Opinion | Elizabeth Warren: We Can Prevent More Bank Failures

The recent bank failures were entirely avoidable.

It’s time to start charging these gun owners with homicide. I’m so tired of irresponsible gun owners. There were 5 adults in the apartment at the time of the shooting. 5.

You know tomorrow that bank is getting a giant bailout. They’ll dress it up, throw a little lipstick on it, but nonetheless the rich will continue to get richer.
