I just had to update my numbers for a lecture, so here's your periodic reminder: Starlink is now 55% of ALL active satellites in orbit.

And given the recent news about that awful billionaire unilaterally deciding to cut of Starlink internet access to parts of the world whenever he wants to, this is extra important to share. Why did our governments effectively gift Low Earth Orbit to one awful dude? This is so bad.

Elon Musk can't stop making things up. From Hyperloop transportation to self-driving cars to Twitter policy, here's a list of the billionaire's biggest hyperbole, evasions, and outright lies

The Big List of Elon Musk’s Hyperbole, Evasions, and Outright Lies

Elon Musk, owner of Twitter (now X) has a long history of misrepresentations, evasions, and lies — from company policy to fighting Mark Zuckerberg.

I wish more tech people asked "how will the most annoying person in my life use this feature" before building it

As YouTube seems to be going increasingly ad-heavy, have had many requests to do posts about how to get into #PeerTube.

PeerTube is an ad-free video platform on the Fediverse. You can follow and interact with PeerTube accounts from Mastodon etc. When a PeerTube account posts a video, it will appear in your Mastodon timeline just like any post, and you can like, share, reply etc.

I just did a long thread of good PeerTube accounts to follow over on @FediFollows (https://social.growyourown.services/@FediFollows/110917302291902468).

The Fediverse has an excellent video platform called #PeerTube. This is a thread full of recommended PeerTube accounts to follow! You can follow PeerTube accounts from Mastodon etc seamlessly, and when a PeerTube account publishes a video you'll see it appear in your Mastodon timeline just like any other post. If you reply to a PeerTube account's post in Mastodon, it will appear as a comment below the video in PeerTube, and if you favourite it it will give the video a thumbs up. 1/9

#Twitter/X has removed all media posted before 2014 🤦‍♂️

More vandalism from @elonmusk. Twitter has now removed all media posted before 2014. Thats - so far - almost a decade of pictures and videos from the early 2000s removed from the service. For example, here’s a search of my media tweets from before 2014. https://t.co/FU6K34oqmA

In a country where nearly every iota of our psyches and our physical spaces has been captured for the purpose of generating a profit, the ongoing existence of public libraries feels not just radical, but astonishing. https://www.niemanlab.org/2023/08/are-libraries-the-future-of-news/
Are libraries the future of news?

Academics, I beg you. Please put copies of your published papers on your website, arxiv, whatever. Not only because it's great for the broader world beyond academia (who can't get behind paywalls at all) but it just took me 15 minutes to try to figure out how to log in to some particular database to get a copy of a paper. I don't even like the 3 minutes it takes to log into the ACM DL versus copying a title into google. Follow copyright rules but you can almost always post SOMETHING somewhere.

Remember that free software licenses are irrevocable - even if a vendor changes a project to a non-free license, the older versions continue to exist as free software. So while we should absolutely criticise vendors who take the work of others and make it non-free, we should also bear in mind that they gifted us the earlier versions in the first place, and cannot take that away again.
