Elon Musk and the Trump administration gleefully shutting down USAID “has already caused the deaths of six hundred thousand people, two-thirds of them children.” according to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Atul Gawande.

People throw around terms like genocide quite freely online but it’s hard to find other words to describe this level of man-made death.

I read @gruber ‘s piece about Apple's pre-announcement of "more personalised Siri”, and I was moved to offer my own thoughts:

Why did Apple pre-announce “more personalised Siri”? — Amy Worrall

In this post , John Gruber discusses how Apple dropped the ball by pre-announcing a feature that doesn’t exist yet in any semblance of a demoable form. I refer of course to the new Smart Siri features that ostensibly exist under the Apple Intelligence branding. Gruber describes how announcing featur

Interesting development to follow: Researchers from the University of Basel and the NCCR SPIN have achieved the first controllable interaction between two hole spin qubits in a conventional silicon transistor.

These qubits can be manufactured with FinFETs transistors using "classical" silicon fabrication methods, opening up the path to faster scaling than competing architectures.

Experiment opens door for millions of qubits on one chip

Researchers from the University of Basel and the NCCR SPIN have achieved the first controllable interaction between two hole spin qubits in a conventional silicon transistor. The breakthrough opens up the possibility of integrating millions of these qubits on a single chip using mature manufacturing processes.

@SwiftOnSecurity Automotive engineer here. My skills definitely come in handy when things unexpectedly go wrong.

For example, turning off the ignition in your car doesn’t do much to reset things. You have to open the drivers door and close it after turning the car off to make a lot of electronics go to sleep.

@asymco My goodness, today’s publication of the Steve Jobs archive is quite the threat to short-term productivity – what a treat!
@parismarx @timnitGebru It feels like a uniquely capitalist standpoint to commoditize culture like writing, art, and music and see it as something that is not just easy to automate, but also worth reducing the undervalued "cheap" effort that it takes to create into something that is produced for "free" by a "machine".
So @parismarx interviewed Dr. @timnitGebru for his podcast Tech Won't Save Us, and Paris made the point that much of what is being "automated" by these large language models and diffusion models is culture—the very thing that we'd want to be able to make more of if the constraints of work were removed.
@asymco https://toyotatimes.jp/en/newscast/002.html I think the statements from Toyoda about Sato’s mission are interesting!
