I don't really post here often. That may change someday; but for now i'll just stick to the occassional post about #linux or my #privacy journey.

If you want to know a little bit more about me, feel free to check out my #introduction post; or start up a conversation.

Posts will auto delete after 3 months, just FYI.

@rl_dane the ritual in question

@rl_dane So, I used to get visual voicemail working without problems on GrapheneOS via the AOSP stock dialer (not google), but a little less than a year ago it stopped working consistently. Around that time I had switched cell plans Verizon -> Verizon, so I suppose that may have caused the issue.

I do also remember hearing lots of reports around that time that visual voicemail was broken on FOSS android dialers and ROMs, so maybe I was just lucky when I had first set it up.

@rrgeorge @iFixit a classic intimidation tactic

The extent to which core linux projects are laying the groundwork for age verification is very concerning.

I understand why some believe they are compelled to do so, and why others feel that it may be better to implement the most minimal conforming implementation in the hopes of fending off something worse.

But the line must be drawn such that no threat can obligate an OS to collect/store personal information - without that freedom, we face an uphill fight to protect general purpose computing.

Waiting for someone to burst into an operating theatre, and argue with the surgeons who are elbow-deep inside the patient, replacing their lung or spleen or coccyx, about how their operating system needs to verify the surgeons age.

@primalmotion @thenewoil They were glassholes ten years ago, and they're glassholes now.

@rl_dane Yeesh, I remember reading up on McKinsey when reading about Enron, (I'm a bit young to have seen all that firsthand), but I'd forgotten quite how bad they were/are .

My latest "corporate controversy" fixation has to Persona and all of the ID verification shenanigans of late.

@rl_dane As a family member told me not so long ago "we are definitely in the bad place".

This should never been allowed to be " bet" on in the first place imo.   https://www.businessinsider.com/polymarket-nuclear-detonation-market-bet-backlash-removal-2026-3?op=1

Polymarket takes down nuclear detonation bet after online backlash

The prediction market would've paid out to traders if a nuclear weapon had been detonated anywhere in the world before a specific date.

California recently passed, and Colorado and NY recently introduced, age verification legislation targeting OS providers that is so imprecisely written that it's unclear how to comply. If you live in one of those states, contact your state senator and rep asking them to oppose this legislation.
