ELI5: #K9Mail und #Thunderbird transition?

Can someone briefly explain when the transition between #k9mail and #Thunderbird is supposed to happen?

I find it confusing they exist in parallel for so long and the info I find just claim there is a transition, but when and how?

For how long can I just stick to K9 if I am not really keen on new features or seeing the cutting edge progress in TB?

Seit k-9 Mail übernommen wurde, hat sich die App zu einem Bloat entwickelt.

Am Wochenende werden ich eine uralt-Version in meinem Archiv suchen und hoffen, dass der Import der Einstellungen funktioniert. Wenn nicht, nehme ich das neu-Einrichten als Buße, ein Update ohne Zwang gemacht zu haben.
