Panic in New York https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2025/06/26/panic-in-new-york/ The prospect of a genuine left-of-centre candidate with widespread support standing to be Mayor of New York is panicking the political establishment, whether Republican or Democratic. They should be worried. He could win.
What is screwing Britain?

The Resolution Foundation says UK incomes will flatline until 2030. This isn’t an accident—it’s by design. High interest rates, unfair taxes, and Labour's inaction are all crushing incomes and deepening inequality. We need change. Funding the Future

The biggest media failure on the bombing of Iran is that every article should have started with: "The Iran nuclear deal signed in 2015 effectively curtailed Iran's nuclear program until the US withdrew in 2018, under pressure from Israel".

Without this context, any commentary is worthless.

£1.2 billion for bombers, paid for by cuts for disabled people

That's Labour's choice, not mine

100 Labour MPs are opposing cuts for disabled people. What's wrong with the rest?
@jetlagjen @RichardJMurphy
Thank you. I normally reboost Prof Murphy, but won't without alt text.
@RichardJMurphy Perhaps they think things may be more complicated than they seem, and that the disabled might be better supported in different ways. I hope so, and certainly think it's unlikely they want to cause harm. Let's not gripe, better to help them be more constructive.
@RichardJMurphy Don't shoot the messenger. This is the reply my labour MP sent in several parts: 1: "On the issue of welfare cuts, I’m afraid I don’t share your concerns about these proposals. There has been a lot of irresponsible fearmongering about the Government’s plans, by people who had no insight into the proposals whatsoever. This has caused concern for many vulnerable people, which should never have happened.
@RichardJMurphy 2. I understand your concerns about the rumours which circulated prior to the Government’s announcement, but I believe that the Secretary of State’s announcement should come as a comfort to everyone concerned. In case it is helpful, I have outlined some of the Government’s announcements below:
@RichardJMurphy 3. Scrapping the unfair Work Capability Assessment which is unhelpfully labelling people as either ‘can’ or ‘can’t’ work, when in reality health conditions fluctuate
An additional £1 billion yearly investment for work, health and skills support – one of the largest ever investments in support to increase opportunities to work for sick and disabled people
@RichardJMurphy 4. An increase in the Universal Credit standard allowance above inflation for the first time ever – that's a £775 cash increase per year by 29/30
An additional Universal Credit premium for new claimants with the most severe, life-long health conditions
@RichardJMurphy 5. Supporting employers to recruit and retain disabled people and people with health conditions through the Keep Britain Working Review and through long-term reform of Access to Work, which provides personalised support for disabled people and people with health conditions
@RichardJMurphy 6. A new Unemployment Insurance, protecting people with a higher rate of benefit if they fall out of work to help them quickly get back on track
@RichardJMurphy 7.
I was also very glad to hear the Secretary of State safeguard the future of Personal Independence Payments, while improving targeting to ensure that those with the greatest need get the most support.
@RichardJMurphy 8. To be clear, people with the greatest need will get more support, not less. I believe the above proposals demonstrate that the Government is – as a Labour Government should – protecting vulnerable, disabled, and people with long-term health conditions, whilst also ensuring that our country’s welfare system is fair and efficient.
@RichardJMurphy My own view is that there was a good reason people booed George Osbourne at the 2012 Paralympics and that Labour needs to be better!
@RichardJMurphy Lobby fodder. Many newbies who wouldn’t say boo to a goose, much less the whip.
