China: Thirty Years Since The Tiananmen Square Massacre
(Thirty years ago, on June 4, 1989, the world witnessed the horror of the Chinese Army firing at unarmed students and civilian protestors at Tiananmen Square, Beijing, with assault rifles and tanks, killing and injuring a huge number. The Chinese government had declared martial law a day before, following massive student protests and a hunger strike demanding a free press and the right to protest. Liberation covered the Tiananmen Square massacre in its June 1989 issue.
