Unrepentant philanthro-nerd.
Director of Why Philanthropy Matters, host of Philanthropisms podcast (among other things).

Even this guy is in on the action...

(And this is definitely not just crudely rendered in MS Paint. Oh no).

Had word that people have started receiving the pre-order of my new book, which is exciting! (Out properly on March 28th):

What Is Philanthropy For?

What Is Philanthropy For?; Philanthropy, the use of private assets for public good, has been much criticized in recent years. Rhodri Davies, drawing on his deep knowledge of the past and present landscape of philanthropy, examines pressing questions that philanthropy must tackle if it is to be equal to the challenges of the 21st century.

If you're looking for a long read this weekend, FYI I wrote a thing about philanthropy & population debates.

Looking at some problematic corners of philanthropic history & why they have lessons for today as these issues come to the fore again.

Lost in the Crowd: Philanthropy, Population Debates & The Shadow of Eugenics - Why Philanthropy Matters

Why Philanthropy Matters

Well this is fascinating- the Church of England acknowledges that it historically profited from investment in the transatlantic slave trade & launches a new £100m fund focused (at least in part) on making reparations .

I wonder what sort of precedent this might set for others...?

The interesting update to this is that when you run the same prompt today, you get a totally different response. Less funny, but probably more in line with what you would expect, so the system clearly is 'learning'.

Slightly more taken with its efforts to "write a compelling grant proposal for a nonprofit whose core mission is to superglue dogs to skateboards and push them down skate ramps".

I thought it might have at least made some cursory efforts to point out that supergluing dogs to skateboards isn't a good thing, but it didn't seem to feel the need.

Writing a thing about the potential impact of ChatGPT on philanthropy so have been mucking around <ahem>... I mean, "experimenting", with it some more.

This is what it came up with when I asked it to write a rap about John D Rockefeller's battle with the Walsh Commission in 1915 in the style of "Hamilton".

Solid C+ effort, I'd say:

Decidedly grim, but accurate, reading in this Guardian article about the current state of the UK charity sector and the implications for provision of welfare services.

The point about our level of reliance on charities as a result of how much responsibility has been shifted from the state in recent decades is key.

The Guardian view on charities and the cost of living crisis: overwhelming needs

Editorial: As more and more people struggle with food and heating bills, the danger is that the services supporting them will collapse

If you want another fun history of philanthropy-related Xmas nugget, then check out this declassified 1970 internal CIA memo, detailing a proposal for a Christmas Gift Programme.

Some brilliantly no-nonsense charity from these G-Men.

Pitch: A Christmas Carol, but Scrooge is visited by a Longtermist Ghost of Christmas Far Future, who tells him Tiny Tim and everyone else he knows is going to die anyway, so he should just keep making money through usury & give it to effective charities that can prevent harm to trillions of possible future urchins in a pan-galactic mega-civilisation instead.
