one way to understand all this is the world’s largest petrostate kneecapping its lowest cost competitors, potentially for years, all in the name of protecting the security of their region.
It's like someone was playing Civilization reasonably well but had proper work to do so they just handed it off to some idiot who was passing by who barely even knew what a video game was but unfortunately we're the NPCs.

Please remember that this happens everywhere, not just the US.

In Switzerland, the right-wing politician and billionaire «Blocher» family is buying up one local journal after the other[1][2].

At the same time, the right-wing parties are denouncing and actively fighting public media by trying to take away their funds[3]. It makes sense, if you are a billionaire and recognize journalism as the fourth estate that it is, you want to push it as far into the "free market" as you can, because that is where money has the most unfettered power, and as someone with the infinite money glitch unlocked, you can reign freely and control the narrative.

Getting rid of public media and taking over private outlets has been the fascists' long-game for a while [4].

La citation du soir :
"La faiblesse de l'argument du moindre mal a toujours été que ceux qui choisissent le moindre mal oublient très vite qu'ils ont choisi le mal."
Hannah Arendt

This may shock some folks, but it is OK to simultaneously say that Khomeini had it coming and is a piece of shit who deserved what he got, and to say that a US president shouldn’t be assassinating foreign leaders without authorization from Congress. We can do that. We can have complex discussions. It is possible.

Edit ** as many have pointed out, the guy I was posting about here is Khameini (perils of late night posting). Khomeini died of cardiovascular disease in 1989.

Anthropic should name their next model “Opus DEI” just to fuck with everyone.
A rare moment where you root for regime change in all three countries involved
Revered actor Sir Ian McKellan telling us what the Bard thought about xenophobia - so beautifully recited I burst into tears. An important message to us, from the 1600s...

This reminds of that 1999 David Bowie interview when he explained to a rather clueless Paxman that the internet was going to be revolutionary (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLf6KZmJyrA)

I'm repeating this. The whole fascist, corrupt, MAGA enterprise would grind to a halt if literally half a dozen Republicans in the House and Senate would find a backbone.
