Cascade River State Park — Southern Minnesota Guy

“You can either be a quitter . . .” … or come back a success story. Your choice.” ~ Hannah Tomeo , from Matika Wilbur ’s book Project 562: Changing the Way We See Native America

1934 and Now: History Lives!

Over the first three decades of the 20th century, Minneapolis was the most notorious “open shop” city in the country.  An employers’ organization (the “Citizens’ Alliance”) leveraged the power of banks, manufacturers, and local government to resist workers’ attempts to unionize. In February 1934 the city’s truck drivers and coal yard workers organized and struck their industry, winning union recognition in a week.

One more photo. This is probably the best shot we got of the whole thing. I meant to include this in the original post.
One of the group noticed that the reflection in the building across the alley gave us a an artistic view of the mural.

Some folks from Remember 1934 got together Sunday to see the new Labor Mural in the Minneapolis. warehouse district. In addition to honoring strikers from 1934, it includes other important figures from Minneapolis labor and civil rights history.

Thanks to Drew Peterson and Juxtaposition Arts for this important piece.

Juxtaposition Arts is a youth arts program in Minneapolis. They’re installing a mural on the Ths Hall Loft Flats in The North Loop. (608 N 3rd St). Their Post on Facebook was a little coy as to the subject, but this photo, location, and the fact that we’re sharing it are huge clues. It should be complete in early October.

Here’s Worksay Magazine’s coverage of our 1934 Truckers’ Struck commemorative event. It’s similar to what we posted earlier from Unicorn Riot as they collaborated on these reports.
