R just ran through the house singing “Not poisonous. Less poisonous. There’s a big difference.”

R, carefully drawing designs on her arms and legs: Hold on, J. I have to do something weird to give me power first.

……all I can say is she’s probably going to really love books with magic systems.

R, playing with puppets at the library: This is a king, and he said “hey, where’s my princess?!” But the princess liked living on her own so she wasn’t there and could take care of herself. So the king threw a tantrum and then he was dead.

This was before I read The Enchanted Forest chronicles and the Paper Bag Princess to her.

Some quotes from my five year old daughter, who is the most extra and most slytherin person I know. (And I love her for it.) She makes me laugh and feel deeply concerned every day. 😂
R=5yo, J=7yo

R: Oh no! The Night Witches are coming to steal my grape!

J: Hold on, I’ll activate invisibility! *makes shooting sounds* Ufda. Looks like it’s time for boomerangs.

R: I can be a boomerang! *bounces out of their fort making rubber band noises and runs around the room*

Good morning! I am an employed person again! 🎉🤞🫣
After almost four months of unemployment I start my new job today.

I am realizing how much I missed having a job. Not just because of the money. Because of the feeling of belonging, identity, and feeling useful.

I’ve tried hard to not base my self-worth off how productive I am, but mostly failed because I live in a meritocracy. So happy to be back to working. Especially since this job is likely to be my best work experience yet.

First book of 2023 finished!
Garth Nix, as always, is delightful.

(aka I found my long lost Lamy Safari fountain pen and wanted a good excuse to scratch the tar out of a piece of paper)

At my local library, a little girl dropped her library books into the ‘return’ slot, waved and shouted “GOODBYE BOOKS, HAVE A GOOD DAY AT SCHOOL!” and my heart grew three sizes 🥺

Fernando Pessoa in his work, The #Book of Disquiet, describes the apartment of a friend as containing small lavishness beyond his means at the expense of some basic necessities as an attempt at "maintaining the dignity of tedium" and speaks directly to me and my decades as being a member of the working poor.
