I find that I don’t post much here because I haven’t quite figured it out.

I’ve figured out that just posting as I did on Twitter doesn’t respect the hard work of the people who made this space to be better. And they’ve made me realize just how bad (dehumanizing, casually toxic) Twitter has gotten since I joined. I don’t really want to go back.

But I don’t know how to go forward. Who to connect to, what to talk about.

I’m working on it. Just didn’t want y’all to think I’d forgotten you.

Just a week or two in and I fking love this place so much. It's like stumbling out of the noise and into the kitchen at a party, and finding your people right there all the time.

You miss the friends you left behind in the shouty room where most who talk to you are looking over your shoulder to see if there's anyone more important to latch onto, but you hope your friends will soon find the kitchen, too.

I am not sure if there is a Mastodon norm about refs to academic 📝, especially by others. 1 thing about academic birdy that really 😤me (and would be great not to replicate here) is people regularly posting links and summaries of papers without giving attribution to the authors. This led to some accounts amassing 📈 followers on the backs of others labor who rarely got credit. With the ⬆️ character counts here, I think there is no excuse for not at least giving a “first author, et al”. Just an💡

I am a political scientist+ 💻ional social👨‍🔬 at the U of Pittsburgh. I use 🤖learning+ Bayesian modeling to understand how institutions x technology shape info flows, conflict, human rights, and democracy. My 🏡 is @ the intersection of the analog and the digital. I direct the Pitt Disinformation Lab:

Pitt Disinformation Lab

Disinformation threatens our health, undercuts our security, and undermines our democracy. Yet, despite high-profile attention to these cascading problems, effective counter-measures remain elusive. The Pitt Disinformation Lab at the Institute for Cyber Law, Policy, and Security goes beyond passive detection and reporting to create a new, community-centered system for warning, understanding, and response to malign influence. PDL connects and empowers communities to rearrange the pixels of disinformation campaigns into tools for future resilience.

The vibe on #Twitter: "I am not paying Elon Musk a penny and will leave if it becomes subscription only."

The vibe on #Mastodon: "I will chip in to help the volunteers running the servers."

It feels more like a co-op than being part of a billionaire's evil plan. Which is nice.

I signed up to crosspost between Twitter and Mastodon using https://crossposter.masto.donte.com.br/ to help with the transition, but I've now disabled the Twitter --> Mastodon postings to keep Mastodon from becoming Twitterized. Mastodon toots still go to Twitter so my followers there know I'm still alive. If you want to do the same, log into the crossposter and into your Twitter account from there and disable forwarding. Let's keep Mastodon constructive and friendly - and with original content!

Where are the scholars studying violence? Can we adopt this group @violence as a place to share and discuss our work?

Tagging @politicalscience scholars, but it would be great to engage with people working across disciplines, approaches, contexts...

One of the most creative uses I’ve ever seen for a #Raspberry_Pi, and that’s saying something.

Using a Raspberry Pi 3B+, Python, OpenCV, and machine learning, the guy created a device that scares the neighborhood chickens off the property
